Vermiculite is a mineral that puffs up into lightweight, pebble-like pieces when heated. It does not burn, which made it a popular loose-fill attic insulation for decades. The problem is not vermiculite itself. Most vermiculite insulation sold in the U.S. came from a mine near Libby, Montana that was contaminated with asbestos, so much of the vermiculite still sitting in attics today contains asbestos fibers.
ABC Environmental Contracting Services offers these vermiculite insulation services in Springfield:
It is possible, especially in older Springfield homes. Vermiculite attic insulation was widely installed from the 1940s into the 1980s, and the most common brand, Zonolite, came from the contaminated Libby mine. If your attic has loose, gray-brown or silvery granular insulation, treat it as if it contains asbestos until it has been tested. There is no need to panic if you find it. Left sealed in the attic and undisturbed, it poses little risk to the rest of the house. The danger comes from stirring it up during storage trips, remodeling or electrical work.
