Asbestos Siding Removal

Testing and Removing Asbestos Siding in Springfield, MO

Asbestos cement siding, often called transite, was a popular choice on homes built from the 1920s through the 1970s, and you will still find it on houses across Springfield’s older neighborhoods. It was durable, fire resistant and inexpensive. ABC Environmental Contracting Services offers asbestos testing and removal to find out whether your siding contains asbestos and, if it does, whether it needs to come off. Siding in good condition is usually not a health risk unless it is cracked, drilled, cut or broken. Contact us to find out whether yours is safe.

About Asbestos Siding

Asbestos siding is made of asbestos fibers mixed with cement. It is brittle and breaks easily when it is pried off, dropped or cut, which releases fibers into the air around your home and yard. Rules about whether a homeowner can remove asbestos siding themselves vary, so always check with your city and the state before starting any work. Given the health risks, we strongly recommend professional asbestos siding removal. Protecting your family’s health is our priority.

What You Need to Know About Removing Old Asbestos Siding

Asbestos siding removal can be a daunting task. Here are some of the key steps required for removing asbestos siding:

  • Asbestos removal permit.
  • Asbestos Removal Warning signs should be posted in the work area.
  • Lay a 6 ft wide strip of 6-mil plastic sheeting around the work area, and heavy-duty plastic bags to hold the siding once it is removed. The siding must be kept wet as you are working with it to reduce dust and particles from flying into the air.
  • Wear a HEPA filter respirator approved for asbestos
  • Disposable coveralls with a hood, rubber gloves, boots, and goggles need to be worn
  • Never bring contaminated work clothes into your home
  • Asbestos removal warning signs should be posted visibly for all to see
  • Close all doors and windows during the removal process
  • Keep the asbestos siding wet while removing the siding, use a mixture of water and liquid soap to spray on the siding
  • Start at the top and work your way down
  • When doing asbestos siding removal don’t break, drop or throw the siding
  • Use 6-mil thick plastic sheeting to wrap the siding then dispose of in plastic bags, tape with duct tape to seal.
  • Mark garbage bags with hazardous waste
  • Know where you are going to dispose of it beforehand, check with local toxic waste disposal companies
  • Dispose of all work clothing including boots, goggles etc.
  • Wash all tools used
  • Bath after removing asbestos, and before re-entering home
  • a pry bar to dislodge nails and siding
  • nailhead cutter
  • scissors or knife to cut plastic sheeting
  • 6-mil polyethylene plastic sheeting
  • HEPA approved respirator
  • disposable coveralls, rubber boots or shoe covers, gloves and safety glasses
  • asbestos disposal bags
  • duct tape
  • garden hose with sprayer
  • liquid dish soap

Pro’s

  • less expensive
  • you can remove it on your own time frame

Con’s

  • the possibility of being exposed to asbestos
  • dirty time-consuming job
  • requires permit
  • could be difficult to complete in 1 day
  • responsible for proper disposal of asbestos

The cons far outweigh the pros when considering a DIY asbestos siding removal project. Asbestos fibers are considered hazardous waste and are nothing to fool around with. Incorrectly handling asbestos can accidentally expose your family and neighbors. Be smart- call the professionals at ABC Environmental Contracting Services.

I needed several repairs done so I could meet my closing deadline. Matt assured me it would be no problem. He had my countertop repaired in a couple of days. Then a team showed up and repaired some ductwork in the attic and did mold restoration under the house. They did an amazing job and in a timely manner. And as with projects and a client that needed everything done yesterday, there were a couple of things that needed addressed after the team left. Now mind you, we live way out of town in Chadwick. It is 45 minutes to anything. So when I asked them to look at the issues, Adrian came out to promptly address these issues and assured me it would be taken care of. It was a Sunday. I didn’t expect anything to get taken care of on a Sunday. The closing is Thursday and the inspector is coming back out to inspect the work, right??? Well about 45 minutes later another truck pulled into my driveway. A guy walked up and was introduced to me. It was John, the owner of ABC. Now when I tell you I was surprised that they were addressing these issues on a Sunday, you can imagine how confident I felt knowing the OWNER OF THE COMPANY came out to make sure everything was done and done right was amazing. I will close on time and the sump pump has been replaced, hand rails added to the deck, and the inspector will check every box that I asked ABC Environmental Contracting to check. So if you need a job done and a job done right that you can count on, I highly recommend you call these people. They aren’t just a company working to earn a check. These are people that care and take pride in their craft. And Adrian even lit my hot water heater and closed my garage door that I left open. These are people you can depend on. Thank you guys for saving the closing on my house.
