At ABC Environmental Contracting Services, we were contacted by a residential homeowner who discovered a water-damaged room in their home. The issue had affected the ceiling, drywall, and wooden flooring, and they needed quick, professional help to stop further damage and make the room safe again. Read on to learn how we tackled water damage in Saint Louis, MO

A Call from a Worried Homeowner

The homeowner had noticed that the ceiling had become swollen, the wooden floor was starting to warp, and moisture was visible on parts of the drywall. These are classic signs of water loss, and we knew we had to act fast to prevent mold and structural issues.

Water-Damaged Room: How We Tackled the Issue

To restore the room and stop the water damage from spreading, we followed a clear step-by-step process:

Assessment and Containment

To begin the restoration process, we needed to understand the extent of the water damage and take steps to protect the rest of the home. Here's how we started:

  • Moisture Inspection: We used a moisture meter to check how far the water had spread through the ceiling, drywall, and flooring.
  • Containment Setup: We installed containment barriers around the affected area to prevent dust, debris, and contaminants from spreading to other rooms during the work.

Safety First: Lead Testing

Before removing anything, we performed a lead test on the existing ceiling and drywall to make sure there were no hazardous materials. Thankfully, the results came back negative for lead.

Removal of Damaged Materials

With safety cleared, we carefully removed the wet drywall and ceiling materials. We also pulled up the sections of damaged wooden flooring that could not be saved.

Cleaning and Sanitizing

Once the damaged materials were out, we vacuumed the entire area using a HEPA vacuum to catch fine dust and debris. Then we applied an antimicrobial solution to stop bacteria and mold from growing.

Drying Process

We placed several air movers and dehumidifiers throughout the room to dry it out completely. This step is critical to making sure no moisture is left behind that could cause future problems.

Final Check

After a few days of drying, we did a final moisture reading to confirm the area was completely dry. Everything looked good, and we were able to clear the space!

Another Happy Homeowner!

The homeowner was very happy with how quickly and cleanly we were able to complete the job. Most importantly, their home is now dry, safe, and ready for repairs and new materials.
