Bathrooms are one of the easiest places for mold to start. Small spots on grout, caulk or the ceiling can usually be cleaned with a sponge or brush and a household cleaner when you first notice them. If they are not dealt with quickly, though, mold spreads to other areas of the bathroom and can work its way into drywall, behind tile and under flooring, where cleaning alone will not reach it.

Mold needs moisture, warmth and something to grow on, and a bathroom supplies all three. Every shower fills the room with steam that settles on walls, ceilings and fixtures. Without a working exhaust fan, that moisture never fully dries. Slow leaks around a toilet, under a sink or behind a shower wall add hidden water, and soap residue gives mold an easy food source. In Kansas City’s humid summer months, bathrooms dry even more slowly, which is why mold often reappears in the same spots.
Some drains do not clear water quickly enough, whether from poor drain design or, more often, from residue building up over time. When water drains slower than it comes out of the faucet or shower head, it pools, and standing water around a slow drain can harbor mold. Clearing slow drains and drying the area after use goes a long way toward keeping mold away. If mold has already taken hold around a sink, tub or shower, ABC Environmental Contracting Services can remove it and address the moisture behind it.

If mold keeps coming back in the grout, caulk or walls even after cleaning with vinegar or bleach, it is likely growing below the surface. In that case, the affected caulk, grout or drywall may need to be cut out and replaced, and there may be hidden mold elsewhere in the bathroom. The only way to know for sure without tearing the whole room apart is a professional mold inspection. Contact ABC Environmental Contracting Services today to talk about how we can keep your Kansas City bathroom mold free.
