As a water damage restoration company, we see a lot of flooded basements in the Kansas City area, and most of them share the same causes. The region’s heavy clay soil holds water against foundation walls after rain, spring storms dump a lot of water in a short time, and older foundations develop cracks over the years. If your basement takes on water, cleaning it up is only half the job. Basement waterproofing addresses where the water is coming from, so you are not dealing with the same mess after the next storm. ABC Environmental Contracting Services offers basement waterproofing alongside our water damage cleanup, so we can dry out your basement and help keep it dry.
Basement flooding is costly and stressful, and it usually comes from one of a few sources. Heavy rain and poor drainage let water collect next to the foundation, where pressure pushes it through cracks and the joint between the floor and walls. Clogged or short gutters and downspouts dump roof water right at the foundation. Sump pumps fail during storms, especially when the power goes out. And plumbing leaks, sewer backups and failed water heaters can flood a basement from the inside. Finding the source is the first step to choosing the right fix.

There is no one-size-fits-all fix for a wet basement. The right waterproofing solution depends on where the water is getting in, how much of it there is and how your property drains. After inspecting your basement, we recommend the approach that fits, which may include one or more of the following.
A sump pump collects water that gathers beneath and around the basement floor and pumps it out and away from the house before it can flood the space. For many Kansas City basements, a properly sized sump pump is the most important line of defense. Things to consider:

A French drain, or interior perimeter drain, is installed along the inside edge of the basement floor to catch water that seeps through the walls or up through the floor joint. The water is channeled to a sump pump and pumped out, relieving the pressure that pushes water into the basement without major excavation outside. Interior drains are a common solution for older Kansas City homes where water comes in along the base of the walls during heavy rain.
Sometimes the simplest fix makes a big difference. Downspout extensions carry roof water away from the foundation instead of dumping it next to the house, and drain grates collect surface water and direct it where it can drain safely. These exterior improvements reduce how much water reaches your foundation in the first place.
