Vermiculite is a mineral that expands into lightweight, pebble-like pieces when it is heated. It does not burn, which made it popular as loose-fill attic insulation. Vermiculite itself is not the problem. The concern is that most vermiculite insulation sold in the U.S. came from a mine in Libby, Montana that was contaminated with asbestos, so much of the vermiculite still sitting in attics today contains asbestos fibers.
ABC Environmental Contracting Services offers these vermiculite insulation services in Kansas City:
It is possible, especially in older Kansas City homes. Vermiculite attic insulation was widely installed from the 1940s into the 1980s, and the most common brand, Zonolite, came from the contaminated Libby mine. If your attic has loose, gray-brown or silver-gold granular insulation, treat it as if it contains asbestos until it has been tested. Do not panic if you find it. As long as it is sealed in the attic and left undisturbed, the risk to the rest of the home is low. The danger comes from disturbing it during storage trips, remodeling or wiring work.
