Vermiculite is a mineral that puffs up into light, pebble-like pieces when heated, and because it does not burn, it was widely used as loose-fill attic insulation. Vermiculite itself is not the issue. Most vermiculite insulation sold in the U.S. came from a mine near Libby, Montana that was contaminated with asbestos, so much of the vermiculite still in attics today contains asbestos fibers.
ABC Environmental Contracting Services offers these vermiculite insulation services in Columbia:
It is possible, particularly in older Columbia homes. Vermiculite attic insulation was installed from the 1940s into the 1980s, and the most common brand, Zonolite, came from the contaminated Libby mine. If your attic has loose, gray-brown or silvery granular insulation, assume it contains asbestos until it is tested. There is no need to panic. Left sealed and undisturbed, it poses little risk to the rest of the house. The danger comes from disturbing it during storage, remodeling or electrical work.
