Project Overview

We recently completed a challenging fire damage content cleaning project in Defiance, MO. The client, a residential homeowner, experienced an electrical fire in their garage, affecting furniture and personal belongings stored on shelves. This case study outlines our approach to restoring the damaged items to their pre-loss condition.

How the Fire Damaged Furniture and Belongings

Upon arrival, we conducted a thorough assessment of the damage. We found that the fire had left soot and smoke residue on many of their personal items, including wood and upholstered furniture, tools, and memorabilia. Our priority was to salvage as much as possible, understanding the sentimental value attached to many of these items.

Content Cleaning Process

  1. Inventory and Pack-Out: We started by inventorying all damaged items. This process involved photographing and cataloging each piece before carefully packing them for transport to our cleaning facility.
  2. Soot and Smoke Removal: At our facility, we began with soot and smoke residue removal. Using HEPA vacuums and dry sponges, we gently lifted the soot without embedding it further into the materials.
  3. Ultrasonic Cleaning: For smaller, non-porous items like tools and metal objects, we used ultrasonic cleaning. This process uses high-frequency sound waves in a cleaning solution to completely remove contaminants.
  4. Esporta Wash System: For soft contents like upholstered furniture, we used our Esporta Wash System. We are one of the very few owners of the Esporta iS Series Washing System in the greater St. Louis area. This advanced washing technology can remove soot, smoke, and odors more effectively than traditional cleaning methods.
  5. Ozone Treatment: To eliminate any lingering smoke odors, we used ozone treatment. This powerful deodorization method breaks down odor molecules, ensuring a fresh, clean scent.
  6. Restoration of Wood Items: Wooden furniture required special attention. We hand-cleaned these pieces with wood-friendly cleaning agents, then polished and deodorized them to restore their original condition.

Final Inspection and Return

After the cleaning and restoration process, each item underwent a quality check to ensure it met our high standards. We then carefully repacked and returned the restored items to the homeowner's garage, arranging them as they were before the fire.
